Hey parents!
I just wanted to let you know about the things your child will be doing during the month of December.
Christmas is coming up and the kids could not be more excited. I love how excited they are about it but I'm more excited about the things we're going to do with that. We'll be working with two different units throughout the month.
The first unit is Christmas around the world. The kids have "scrapbooks" that they'll be working on throughout our journey. They'll have passports with stamps from all the countries we "travel" to and boarding passes for all of the plane trips we take. We'll be setting up the chairs in rows and every few days we'll "fly" to a new country to learn about how they celebrate Christmas there. The countries that we'll be learning about are United States, Canada, Mexico, Italy, England, France, Sweden, and Germany.
Along with that I want the kids to understand that some people celebrate different holidays too. I think it is crucial that kids at this age become familiar with the different things that are out there so that they can be understanding and culturally competent people in the world.
This week to kick that unit off we did a Christmas week. We talked about Christmas traditions and made reindeer food and wrote letters to Santa and listened to Christmas music. Next week will be Hanukkah. We'll learn about Hanukkah and do a craft or two in relation to that as well as learning about what foods they usually eat for Hanukkah and what music they like to listen to during Hanukkah. Then we'll have Kwanzaa week. We'll learn about what Kwanzaa is and why people celebrate it, what things they do, what food might be traditional during that time, and what music they might listen to. We'll do a few crafts with that as well like making unity candles and things like that.
The kids are really excited about all of this. It's fun learning about the different ways people do things! I just didn't want you guys to be surprised if they came home with a craft for a different holiday and I want you guys to understand why we're doing it. I think the kids are going to gain so much from it and it's so much easier to do fun things like this with this group of kids because they're already so willing to accept differences. I can't wait for you to see their Christmas around the world scrapbook either! I think you guys will love it.
Please let me know if you guys have any questions at all!
Thanks and Happy Holidays!
