Hey parents!
Our homework folders are here! Yay! So we'll be starting homework this week. I believe the way they have set it up in the past is that they send the folder home on Friday and have it due the following Friday. I can do that if that works best for everyone.
The front of the homework folder has a chart on it. I would like you to fill out the date, the book you are working or worked on with your kiddo that night and the minutes you spent working on it. This is to help encourage reading practice at home. It has been proven over and over again that the kids that read every night at home with a family member build better reading skills faster. It doesn't need to be a lot of time. But even ten minutes each night can make a huge difference!
On the inside there will be a side for things that need to stay at home and things that need to come back to school like papers you might need to fill out or things we're working on for more than just that time.
They will also be getting some small pieces of paper with their sight words on it from their reading groups. Some groups have already seen some of those come home. Please work on those words with your student whenever you have time. It will help their reading and writing in every subject.
We do spend a lot of time on reading and writing during the day but math has a much smaller chunk of time in the schedule so the majority of "worksheet" type homework will be math. Don't read the directions to your student unless they absolutely need it. I've been trying to get them in the habit of trying it out before they come to me and then if they need help we sound it out and work on it together. Sometimes you can read all the words except for the ones that are easy to sound out and that can be great practice for the student. Just be aware that some of the kids ask what the directions are before they've even looked at the words and it'll be a lot easier on you or the homework helper if you don't have to read them things that they can figure out themselves. Plus, it's great practice!
Please email me or call me or fbook message me with any questions!
